TalkDock setup, usage, and disclosure guide

Covers TalkDock Free 1.1.6, TalkDock Pro 1.1.6, shortcode usage, privacy behavior, and support paths.

Use this documentation to install TalkDock, configure the WhatsApp destination, adjust the floating button, understand Pro controls, and review the data-handling disclosures before going live.

Always test TalkDock on a staging site or low-risk page before deploying changes on a production site with active traffic.

Requirements and installation

Install the free TalkDock plugin first. TalkDock Pro is an add-on and requires the free plugin to be installed, active, and at version 1.1.6 or newer.

Current Free and Pro compatibility targets include WordPress 5.8 or newer and PHP 7.4 or newer, while the public content plugin itself requires WordPress 5.8 or newer and PHP 7.2 or newer.

  • Upload and activate TalkDock Free.
  • Open the TalkDock settings page in wp-admin.
  • Add the WhatsApp click-to-chat URL before expecting the frontend button to render.
  • Install and activate TalkDock Pro only when premium features are needed.
  • Activate the Pro license from the License tab before using premium controls.

Free plugin configuration

The General tab controls the site-wide enable switch, WhatsApp link, and accessibility label. The WhatsApp URL must use an approved WhatsApp host so unrelated URLs are not saved as the chat destination.

The Design tab controls the gradient colors, left/right alignment, side distance, bottom distance, and animation. Dynamic CSS is generated through WordPress file APIs when possible, with inline CSS as a fallback for locked-down hosts.

  • Allowed WhatsApp hosts: wa.me, api.whatsapp.com, and web.whatsapp.com.
  • Distance fields are constrained to safe pixel values.
  • Animation choices are bounce, pulse, shake, or none in the free plugin.
  • The widget does not render when disabled or when the saved WhatsApp link is empty or only a sample/default value.

Messages, visibility, and shortcode

The Message tab can append a prefilled text parameter to the WhatsApp link. The Visibility tab can limit rendering by login state or hide the floating button on mobile widths below 782px.

The [talkdock_button] shortcode lets administrators place a TalkDock button inside shortcode-capable content. With Pro active, the inline variant can produce a styled content CTA with a visible text label.

  • Free shortcode: [talkdock_button].
  • Pro inline shortcode example: [talkdock_button inline="yes" label="Chat with us"].
  • Visibility choices: all visitors, logged-in users only, or logged-out visitors only.
  • Hide-on-mobile affects the floating button through CSS.

Recommended Pro setup order

Configure Pro in a practical order so each feature has the dependencies it needs. Start with the license, then the contact destination, then operational rules such as hours, agents, targeting, and analytics.

This order reduces confusion because several Pro features depend on saved settings from the free plugin, especially the default WhatsApp link and visual design.

  • 1. Activate the Pro license.
  • 2. Confirm the free WhatsApp link and accessibility label.
  • 3. Add agents and order them by priority if the site uses multiple destinations.
  • 4. Configure business hours and offline lead capture if the team has open and closed periods.
  • 5. Add targeting include/exclude rules only after the basic widget works everywhere.
  • 6. Enable consent prompt, greeting bubble, premium style, and motion as needed.
  • 7. Review analytics locally before enabling optional GA or Meta events.

Data and privacy checklist

Before publishing, make sure the site privacy notice explains how visitors are contacted after they click WhatsApp or submit an offline lead. TalkDock can provide plugin disclosures, but it cannot automatically write the website owner’s privacy policy.

Administrators should review support reports before sending them and should avoid placing credentials, payment details, private keys, or customer secrets in messages or screenshots.

  • Free frontend display does not send a background bug report.
  • Report-a-Bug sends data only after administrator submission.
  • Pro offline leads are stored locally on the customer site.
  • Pro click analytics are local unless optional GA or Meta events are enabled.
  • External WhatsApp, Google, Meta, hosting, email, or avatar services may process data according to their own policies.

Troubleshooting basics

If the button is not visible, check the enable switch, WhatsApp URL, visibility rule, mobile hiding rule, targeting rules, cache, and whether the current page matches an include/exclude configuration.

If Pro controls are missing, confirm that the free plugin is active, the free plugin version is compatible, and the Pro license is active or within its allowed grace state.

  • Clear page cache or optimization cache after changing placement or generated CSS settings.
  • Inspect whether another theme or plugin is hiding fixed-position elements.
  • Check browser reduced-motion settings when testing animation behavior.
  • Use the Support page for safe bug reports and include reproduction steps.

Public review references

The public pages are intentionally stable. Use them in plugin readmes, admin links, support replies, review discussions, and public sales pages so users can verify Terms, Privacy, support, and product scope from one source.

Accessibility and reduced motion

TalkDock respects the visitor's system-level reduced-motion preference through its bundled CSS. When prefers-reduced-motion is active, all button animations are suppressed to avoid discomfort for motion-sensitive users.

The floating button uses an aria-label configurable by the administrator. The default value is "Chat with us" but should be customized to match the site language and context.

  • Bundled CSS includes @media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce) rules.
  • Custom aria-label for screen reader accessibility.
  • All interactive elements are keyboard-navigable.
  • SVG icons include aria-hidden="true" and focusable="false" attributes.

Security and privacy basics

TalkDock follows WordPress security conventions for administrator-only settings, validated WhatsApp destinations, sanitized saved values, and safely escaped output.

  • Administrative settings are limited to authorized site managers.
  • WhatsApp destinations are validated against supported WhatsApp hosts.
  • Visitor-facing output is rendered through safe WordPress escaping patterns.
  • Pro analytics and lead features include abuse-prevention controls.
  • Design distance and delay values are constrained to reasonable ranges.
